York Wedding Photographer | Relaxed Documentary Wedding Photography

I'm Paul Hawkett, a multi award winning wedding photographer with 15 years of experience and more than 475 weddings photographed since 2011. I photograph weddings throughout York and North Yorkshire, including city centre weddings, historic venues, country houses, hotels and relaxed celebrations across the surrounding countryside.
My approach is around 90 percent documentary. I quietly capture the real moments as they happen, from the nervous excitement of the preparations and the emotion of the ceremony to the hugs, laughter, drinks, dancing and all the little moments you may not even notice on the day.
I also believe you should have some incredible photographs of the two of you. When the moment is right, I'll gently guide you into a small number of relaxed portraits, creating dramatic images without turning your wedding into a photoshoot.
Whether you're getting married at York Minster, The Hospitium, The Grand York, The Milner York, Sandburn Hall, or somewhere completely different, my aim is always the same: to tell the story of your wedding honestly and beautifully while allowing you to spend your day with the people who matter most.
Wedding Photography That Feels Like Your Wedding
Your wedding day isn't a photoshoot, and I don't believe you should spend hours standing around waiting for photographs.
My documentary wedding photography is about being present without constantly being directed. I'll be there for the important moments, but also for the things happening around them: your dad trying to keep it together during the ceremony, friends catching up over a drink, grandparents dancing, the chaos on the dance floor and the moments between the big moments. I blend into the background as much as possible, allowing your wedding to unfold naturally.
Then, when the opportunity comes along, I'll step in and create a few beautiful portraits that give you something spectacular to put on the wall.
The result is a wedding gallery that doesn't just show what your day looked like. It brings back the atmosphere, the people and the moments that made it yours.
